Do you pause and reflect on the thoughtfulness and purpose of Rotary’s monthly mission statements such as the October Vocational Service focus on “high ethical standards in business and professions?”

I’ve often thought Rotary attracts the very best people from their professions, and from the best people Rotary brings out their best.

Every club should show case it’s examples  of  Vocational Service Above Self Stars with appropriate press releases and an annual award to the Rotarian who serves with the most  dedication.

If all Business Leaders would follow Rotary’s Ethics and Vocational  standards there would be no economic meltdowns.  Celebrate with pride throughout October that we are a part of an organization working to help our world focus on the true values of our vocations.

Take the time to single out your club’s Vocational Service Stars.  Tell them that you join with me in feeling especially good knowing “The Future of Rotary Is In Your Hands.”

On September 11th Rotary has been asked to take part in a national “Together We Read” effort to demonstrate the American Volunteer spirit in classrooms across the country.  It is not a coincidence Rotary is called upon when our focus turns to the youth of our communities.

          Our most energized and effective clubs are noted for Scholarship programs, Youth Exchanges, RYLA, the Four Way Speech recognitions, Rotaract and Interact involvement. Throughout the world of Rotary September is known as New Generations Month.

          Our exchange students will be recognized at our District Conference. Once again a silent auction will take place at the Conference, and District 6110 Rotarians have been asked to start now finding items such as weekend retreats to stimulate the bids and needed funding for our Youth Exchange Programs.

          Many clubs are starting “Service Above Self Awards” reflecting character and sportsmanship to be presented at half time ceremonies in the local schools.

          New Generations Month can also refer to young, emerging leaders of our communities who truly welcome, and appreciate the opportunity to network and learn from our Rotary leaders.  If you have not done so already, start your own Rotary legacy by introducing a young person to our world.

          Share the Rotarian Magazine with your family and give copies to school libraries.  Select an article for the classroom of your choice in the “Together We Read” campaign on September 11th. Help make September known as New Generations Month.

          August has always been one of my favorite months of the year for family birthdays and anniversaries and now for Rotary District 6110 celebration planning.

          In July, Doris and I visited 27 Rotary clubs, and I can guarantee you all 27 are enjoying membership growth as a result of focusing on personal Rotary legacies and inviting those who demonstrate “service above self” into their clubs. We will celebrate the leaders at District Conference.

          It is a fact that nearly eighty percent of us have never invited a guest or sponsored a new member.  That figure is changing in 6110, thanks to fun contests, and  very special Assistant Governors and Club Presidents who are helping Rotarians to focus on meaningful growth in our communities.

          Membership matters.  We will reverse the trend on the charts for North America, but more importantly we are planting seeds for a sturdy growth of new Rotarians who will define new programs and accept the responsibilities for project completions.

          Being in your clubs has already been a life changing experience.

I am so genuinely impressed with how our clubs make life better in their respective communities and with International projects.  Not to make this opportunity available to others is an injustice to your friends and acquaintances.

          There is not a single club I have  visited, that I would not be proud to be a member.  I suspect there are a lot of other people who would feel the same way if you would invite them to visit.

          AND THEY’RE OFF….

          In my mind, I often visualize horses “out-of-the-gate,” or athletes exploding forward following the starter’s pistol, as I think of our new year in Rotary District 6110.

          To reach worthy goals requires focus.   What is your image of your role in Rotary for yourself and for your club this year?  What contributions will you make to help further the community and worldwide programs of Rotary?

          In the next 90 days, please focus on new members.  Our District goal is 6110 members by September 31^st, 2009.  We will maintain a “scoreboard” on our District Web Site.  Some will get out of the gate quickly, others will trail, but gain ground.  All clubs will grow.

          In every single community there are so many good people who would make outstanding Rotarians.  The key is to “invite” them to come as your guest, “introduce” them to your friends and the concepts of Rotary, and after the second visit, “install” them.  The process itself is very important.

          ROTARY has suggested Newsletters be no more than one page that will help the district focus on current priority.  News and feature items will be found on the District Web site: 6110times.org

          Weekly reports on my club visits will also be found on our WEB. We encourage you to send in photos and articles that promote your club’s activities.

          Go for your Goals, achieve the Presidential Citation.  We’ll tell your story.
